It wouldn't be a Carolina Herrera show without column gowns, and with an arsenal of chiffon, organza, tulle, georgette - and some added eye-crossing prints - in her toolkit, the designer delivered
Monochromatic geometric prints established, Ms Hererra's collection set about offering variations on a theme, simply adding several jolts of brick orange, teal and burgundy

Sending down a variety of classic dress styles - column, strapless, shift - the New York heavyweight, looking to Venezuelan artists for inspiration, seemed happy to let her swags of optical illusion fabric do the talking

Much like Bridget Riley¿s 1962 Blaze, Ms Hererra's black and white lines created an alternating pattern that, to the eye, appears to shift back and forth. Put that on a moving dress, and you have a sight for sore eyes

'The reaction of two layers, I find totally kinetic,' Ms Herrera said backstage. 'It creates its own movement'

The clothes certainly moved with fresh ease, but her signature polished elegance - most often seen on the red carpet's A-list - still stood

Some of the ivory, black and pink gowns with a silk organza overlay were like an Op Art painting come to life

Layers helped to lift her second kinetic effect, with many looks veiled in filmy organza - some which were crafted in juxtaposing patterns, adding depth and dimension to the optical prints
